How to convert a Control4 Showroom Account to a Customer Account
Customer Accounts are created in OvrC. If you haven't registered the controller in OvrC, read How to register a Control4 Controller in OvrC before you continue.
Caution: This process should be done on-site to prevent the controller from going offline.
If the controller is already registered in OvrC
-
Go to the Customer Location > Categories tab > Control & Automation and verify the controller is already tied to a Control4 Account. If the Status says "Controller registered", you need to unregister the controller and create a new OvrC Location.
-
Go back to your Customer list and click the kebab menu next to the Customer name, then click Add Location.
-
Enter the necessary information to create the new Location.
Pro Tip: Use the email+alias trick (e.g., youremail+location1@example.com) to create a unique variation of your existing email.
Note: Remember, you cannot reuse an email address associated with a my.control4.com. If it’s not associated with a my.control4.com account, the email can be used.
-
Log in to customer.control4.com and go to the Controller Registration page. Click the Unregister Controller button.
-
If you had to unregister the controller, claim the controller in the new Location.
-
Go to Categories > Control & Automation and click Manage, then the Register link.
-
This creates a new OvrC Customer account, so you need to go through the System Takeover process to transfer the devices and their settings.
Adding Control4 Connect
-
Click the Settings tab and go to Manage Access.
-
Click Add User to enter the customer's Email Address and Phone Number. Then select which applications to invite them to.
-
Select Control4 then click Select Plans.
-
Verify Control4 Connect is selected, then click Send Invite.
-
Open the Control4 mobile app and tap Register. Review the Terms and Services before accepting them.
-
Create a password, then tap the Next button.
-
You must have a Connect subscription because this is a new Customer account. Follow the instructions in How to Add a Control4 Demo Plan to a system.
-
In OvrC, go to the Categories page and verify the Project Status says "Controller registered, handoff completed."
FAQ: Using Emails When Setting Up a New Location in MyDot via OvrC
Q: Can I use an email associated with my existing dealer account to create a new location in MyDot through OvrC?
A: No. Any email already associated with your current dealer account cannot be used to create a new location in customer.control4.com or my.control4.com. This includes all emails tied to your dealer profile.
Q: What happens if I try to use one of those emails?
A: You may encounter an error during setup. This is a known limitation: the system treats those emails as already in use, and attempts to reassign or change them (as you would with a customer email) typically do not work in this context.
Q: What should I do instead?
A: We recommend using one of the following options:
-
A completely different email address not associated with your dealer account, or
-
Use the email+alias trick (e.g., youremail+location1@example.com) to create a unique variation of your existing email.
